When the power goes out
The first question is whether your system has a pump. A gravity system does not care about a power cut — waste flows to the tank and effluent flows on to the drainfield with no electricity involved. A pumped system is different: waste still reaches the tank, but nothing moves onward, and the tank starts filling toward the point where it backs up.
On a pumped system, the answer during an outage is simply to use very little water. No laundry, no dishwasher, short showers, and flush only when you need to. Most outages here are measured in hours and a household that is careful will ride one out without incident.
The time to find out which kind you have is now, not at hour six of a windstorm. A control panel or alarm box mounted outside the house means a pump.
A full house at the holidays
This is the one that catches people. A house sized around four occupants suddenly has ten in it, and the volume of water passing through the tank roughly doubles for a week. That surge is the problem: it lifts solids that had settled and carries them out toward the drainfield before the bacteria have had a chance to break them down. The damage is not visible at the time and shows up later as a drainfield that no longer drains.
Spreading the load helps more than anything else. Stagger showers rather than running six in a row, and keep laundry to a couple of loads a day instead of clearing it all on the last morning. If you are hosting a large group and the tank has not been pumped in years, getting it done beforehand is the cheap version of this problem.
The other holiday hazard is cooking grease. It goes down warm and liquid and sets solid in the tank, where nothing digests it. Pour it into a tin and bin it.
Getting through winter
Vancouver Island winters are mild enough that hard freezes are the exception, which is exactly why systems here are less prepared for them than systems in colder places.
Leave the snow where it is.An undisturbed layer over the tank and drainfield is insulation. What causes trouble is compacting it — driving or parking over the drainfield, plowing it clear, or wearing a path across it. Compacted snow and soil conduct cold downward instead of holding it off.
Fix dripping fixtures before the cold. A slow constant trickle through the line is one of the more common ways a pipe freezes, because it never moves fast enough to carry its own warmth.
An empty house is its own risk. With no flow, the system cools and the bacteria slow right down. For a property being closed up for the season, having the tank pumped first is the standard approach.
